Abstract

On 20 June 1956 the Fränkische Tag reported a silver hoard found at Rattelsdorf, consisting of seventy old silver coins which showed on one side a woman holding a cross in her right hand and raising her left as if to swear. They were found during excavation for a cellar at a depth of about eighty centimetres, packed in two rolls; sherds of a vessel were absent, though a linen wrapping may have decayed in more than seven hundred years. After long negotiations 63 pieces, some only halves, could be acquired, while seven were lost. The find contained a single type: on the front a facing bust with a cross and the left hand raised, on the back a building with a crossed gable and two towers; the average weight of 49 pieces is 0.352 g.
