Abstract
Since Franz Streber treated the south German rainbow cups as a group of their own a hundred years ago, their sudden appearance, their date and their types have repeatedly drawn attention, most recently from Karl Pink, who ordered the varieties by type and approximate period of striking. Pink saw the typological model in a rare gold piece of the Bohemian Celts, the so-called curled animal stater with its axe and curled animal, counted as the tenth subsidiary series of Bohemian gold coinage. Its typological significance was treated by Streber, Paulsen and Pink, while the metrological evidence was hardly considered. Because Pink ascribes to this series a particular influence on the emergence of the Vindelician rainbow cups, the paper sets out the open problems and the ways towards solving them.
