Abstract

To write the monetary history of a region, comprehensive registers of finds are needed first; such work is in progress, and numismatists are now turning to the right methods of evaluation. For the eleventh to fourteenth centuries, when regional tendencies are strongest, the monetary history of large parts of Europe can only be studied within the areas of circulation, such as the Lake Constance region or the area of the Friesacher. The basic method, the study of the sequence of finds, was applied with success by Luschin; beside it stand the geographical distribution, the comparison of circulation areas and the study of die links. The paper treats, in theoretical terms, the question of how far secure conclusions may be drawn from the mere number of finds.
