Abstract

The prevailing doctrine, as found in Babelon, Head and Seltman, ends the early Chalcidian coinage with the eagle and wheel type in 507/506, assigns no coins to the fifth century and assumes that striking resumed only about 369. It was not always so: Head himself placed the type between about 480 and 445 in the British Museum catalogue and in the first edition of the Historia Numorum, and Ziebarth, Regling and Gardner gave the same end date. The new dating goes back to a note by Six which Babelon took up: after the defeat by Athens, Chalkis became an Athenian colony, lost its independence and struck no coin for a long time. The paper examines that argument.
