Abstract
In hardly any other part of the Greek world does the coinage pose as many historical problems as in Sicily. Karl Christ recently discussed them and set out critically the questions long debated, and Heinrich Chantraine showed with the Demareteion that even for the most discussed of coins substantial progress is possible after close work on the sources. Anyone wishing to join Sicilian history to the testimony of the coins nevertheless meets unsolved questions almost everywhere, especially in the third century and at Syracuse. The chronological sequence of the Syracusan issues between Dionysios I and the submission to Rome in 212 remains largely unclear despite the work of Head, Hill, Holm and Giesecke, quite unlike the archaic and classical period.
