Abstract

The coinage history of the upper Rhine in the later Hohenstaufen period is attested for the Strasbourg area by a number of notable finds, among them Oos and Illingen on the Baden side, from which large parts reached the Baden coin cabinet after their recovery in 1836 and 1867. A few years ago a new one was added which is in no way inferior in importance, because it survived better and was not dispersed at once but promptly studied: the find of Rotenfels. Because of their close kinship in place and time all three are treated together, especially as the older two are so inadequately published that what they contained has first to be established. Besides the Strasbourg pfennig there appear Haller and Cologne pfennigs, English sterlings, Lorraine denarii and Italian coins.
