Abstract
It will not do to impose on the history of Greek coinage points of view that disregard stylistic development; demands that follow merely from historical theories cannot be met unexamined by numismatics. The Greek coin is not only a document of state; far more than the Roman coin it is an artistic monument with laws of its own. Little as its contact with archaeology is close, ancient numismatics has always been ready to render ancient history every possible and impossible service. What follows from that the author shows by the example of Abdera on the Thracian coast at the turn from the classical to the Hellenistic age, when the abolition of local minting privileges by no means set in abruptly with Philip or Alexander.
