Abstract

The unobtrusive Roman intaglios are, properly used, a considerable source, and besides the gems the glass pastes are especially important, since they are mostly not single pieces but mass editions sold among ordinary people; their subjects can tell us about intellectual and political currents of which historiography was hardly aware. Precise dating is the precondition, and in that the catalogues have scarcely gone beyond Furtwängler's broad brackets: stylistic comparison with major art offers little substance for such tiny images, technical criteria are used only roughly, and the circumstances of discovery hardly at all. The newly awakened discussion about the dating of late antique glyptics justifies discussing at length an unpublished glass paste from the Arndt collection.
