Abstract

Among the many pilgrimage medals and religious pieces in coin collections the so-called Benedict medals keep turning up, so that the numismatist asks after their meaning and origin and comes upon a large complex of questions; members of the Benedictine order above all have concerned themselves with it. The paper summarises the results of that research without offering an exhaustive numismatic treatment. In its present form the medal shows on the front a cross whose arms bear initials intersecting in the central S, four further letters in the angles of the cross and fourteen more around it; on the back stands Saint Benedict with cross and monastic rule, the raven of the legend at his feet, surrounded by the legend Crux sancti patris Benedicti.
