Abstract

In 1790 the Nassau Weilburg county for 17300 fl. sold an amount of older gold coins, Louis d'or, carolins, souverains d'or, Max d'or, ducats and pistols, that only partly had the full legal weight and therefore only were apt to be melted down for bullion. The reason for this transaction was the rise of the price of gold in Europe after 1760. The author looks into the gold-silver ratio in different European states and into the weight standards and fineness of European gold coinage
