Abstract

The aurei and denarii struck by Sextus Pompey as Praefectus Classis et Orae Maritimae ex SC in Sicily so far had been dated to the time of 44/43 to 35 B. C. By numismatic as well as historical/ecological considerations the author concludes that this coinage has to be dated into the time of autumn 37 to early summer 36 B. C., when Pompey equipped his fleet. AXEL JÜRGING, Die erste Emission Gordians III., p. 95 Since some new hitherto unknown coin types of Gordianus III have come to our attention, the author reconsiders this emperor's first issue, as well in respect of the types as the distribution of the denominations to the particular types and in respect of the historical context. Of the first issue's type the one representing the emperor running with shield and spear is especially remarkable. It alludes to the menacing situation along the empire's frontier in the years A. D. 238/239
