Abstract

Like several other parts of Aristotle's Athenaion politeia, the tenth chapter, which deals with Solon's reform of measures, weights and coins, presents considerable difficulties of interpretation. Views on what Aristotle actually means diverge widely, and the verdicts range from the dismissive judgement that everything in it is unfortunately wrong to the acknowledgement that his statements agree well with the facts otherwise ascertainable. Before one debates whether Aristotle reports impossibilities or informs us reliably, the author holds, a sound translation of the Greek text must first be established. The paper performs that groundwork and tests the interpretations against it.
