Abstract
A hoard recovered at Market Stainton in Lincolnshire in 1915/16 and 1938/39 and now fully published makes it possible to discuss afresh some problems of the early follis coinage in Gaul and Britain. Carol Sutherland advanced the chronology of the Trier and Lyon issues and proposed a date for each series, resting on two premises accepted today: that all folles with the same field marks belong to the same series, those marks serving as control marks for the mint staff, and that the series follow one another in time. Corrections are nonetheless needed, because it is not always clear which consulate the consular busts indicate, and because Sutherland placed the beginning of the Trier coinage only in 296 although he had himself dated the reform to 294.
