Abstract

In the journal Hermes, Patrick Bruun proposed moving Constantine's victory over Maxentius at the Milvian Bridge back from 312 to 311. Because Bruun has long worked on late antiquity and especially on the numismatics of the Constantinian period, because his monograph on the coinage of Arelate is a real advance on Maurice, and because he is preparing the Constantinian volume of the Roman Imperial Coinage, the proposal deserves attention and a timely objection. Bruun starts from a passage in Lactantius; since Maxentius became Augustus as early as October 306, his first five years ended in the autumn of 311. Yet Groag had already recognised that Lactantius errs over the number of regnal years, so that the argument rests on uncertain ground from the outset.
