Abstract
A preliminary report by a working group of five authors on the undertaking of a catalogue of ancient coin finds, which the Numismatic Commission of the German states was able to begin on 1 October 1953; the intention had already been contained in the medieval find catalogue that Walter Hävernick had begun from Hamburg in 1950. Munich had to be the working centre, because only there on German soil are an internationally important ancient collection and a rich library available. The first part names the defects of existing presentations: scattered find publications, inconsistent citation, incomplete identifications, missing information on where material now is, false identifications, the uncritical passing on of find reports, and gaps. The second deals with the new recording, the third and fullest with evaluation, from closing coins to the laws of circulation.
