Abstract

The first instalment of the literature surveys and therefore the model for the series. Its aim is to help even the non-numismatist find his way in the widely scattered specialist literature and to show where results of research are available; the survey is not to replace the reading of the individual studies but to lead to them, while highlighting the essential results. The ordered presentation of material remains the first task of numismatics. After Eckhel, Mionnet and the incomplete Babelon, the coin corpus of the Prussian Academy prompted by Mommsen was to offer a complete publication, but the undertaking failed; the presentation of material then found its authoritative form in the Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum, begun in 1931, as a photographic publication with brief text.
