Abstract
The inadequate knowledge of early Macedonian history is repeatedly felt as painful, and every attempt to go beyond the works of Geyer and Hoffmann has so far almost always foundered on the poor state of the tradition. From the standpoint of ancient history, then, a study by Doris Raymond on the coinage of the first Macedonian kings, Alexander I and Perdikkas II, down to 413 BC deserves all the more attention. She sees her task in recording the material but draws historical conclusions from it. The paper takes this as an occasion to develop thoughts on the relation between political events and coinage, more as a stimulus than as criticism, and reproaches the book above all for neglecting internal Macedonian development in favour of a framework of foreign policy.
