River gods on coins: Pergamon and Ephesus in urban competition
Alexandra Werner, Munich
Rivers played a central role as deities in the cities of Asia Minor and were depicted on coins. The lecture examined how the rival cities of Pergamon and Ephesus deliberately used river gods to combine religious veneration with civic identity. The iconography of the coin images allows conclusions about the significance of water in ancient society.
