MONTHLY LECTURE
Mysterious marks on the coinage of Antioch in the second half of the 4th century
Wolfram Tillack, Munich
The lecture dealt with enigmatic Greek letters on small bronzes of the late Roman mint of Antioch. It presented a hitherto unknown, rare issue from the time of Emperor Valens as well as four new AE3 coin types. The control marks were interpreted as possible initial letters of a short message, and the unusual use of Greek on Latin-language coins was placed in its historical and religious context.
