From boy to man and from prince to emperor

The lecture at the Christmas celebration dealt with dynastic pictorial propaganda on ancient coins and showed how Roman emperors depicted their heirs and themselves at various stages of life. Using dated coin portraits, the development from boy to man was documented through head shape and beard growth. A hitherto unpublished portrait head of Severus Alexander illustrated the method.
