Early Greek small coins as works of art

MONTHLY LECTURE

Early Greek small coins as works of art

Prof. Dr. Ulrich Schenck, Munich

The lecture was devoted to early Greek small coins from the period of about 650 to 450 BC, with weights between 0.05 and 3 grams. Given their small size, the coin images were tiny and strongly simplified. Many pieces remained without inscription and thus offer considerable detective challenges. The presentation documented the development from the Lydian electrum issues to the spread of silver coins around the Mediterranean, with particular attention to regions and cities with early coinage.
