Alexandria Troas and the Goths: coin hoards and imitations of the 3rd century AD
Tobias Esch M.A., Kelten Römer Museum Manching
In AD 262 Goths plundered the ancient port city of Alexandria Troas. Archaeologists discovered several coin hoards there, including one beside a skeleton in the city's sewer system. The Goths also captured coin dies and used them to produce barbarous imitations. The lecture showed how these finds make the events of the 3rd century tangible.
